Book Club: The Wedding People

This was, without a doubt, one of our most epic Book Club nights to date.

When we chose The Wedding People, we’ll admit the theme played a role in the decision. A wedding-themed Book Club felt like an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. But the book itself more than held its own. As expected from its glowing reviews, it was fantastic. Funny, sharp, heartfelt, and incredibly readable, it sparked one of our most animated discussions yet.

My sister and I decided to host at her home, and from there the planning quickly turned into a full creative project. As always, everyone contributed, while my sister and I focused on the food, decor, and overall flow of the night.

The Hosting & Setup

We ordered sushi and put together a mix of appetizers so the evening felt relaxed and abundant rather than structured. The table filled up beautifully as everyone arrived with elevated snacks, and it quickly became one of those graze-all-night situations.

One of my favourite details was the guest book. I brought a Polaroid camera so we could photograph everyone’s outfits and then write our thoughts and reviews of the book throughout the evening. It added such a personal layer and became a keepsake we’ll love flipping back through.

To lean fully into the theme, we ordered florals online and made several bouquets and centrepieces, which turned out far more beautiful than I expected. We also added classic bridal games like Draw Your Own Wedding Dress and Wedding Advice, which ended up being both hilarious and surprisingly competitive.

The Food & Drinks

One of our members is a true wedding cake baker extraordinaire, and she created an actual, legitimate wedding cake for the night. It was stunning, delicious, and completely elevated the entire experience. Having a real wedding cake felt like the final touch that made the theme come alive.

Everyone brought an appetizer or elevated snack, and together it created a table that felt celebratory and indulgent. We helped ourselves to multiple rounds of food while chatting and eventually settling in to discuss the book.

The signature drink of the night was an Aperol Spritz, something we all love and the perfect choice for the mood.

The Candy Table Moment

One of the most talked-about details of the night came courtesy of Alyssa, who created a candy table inspired entirely by moments from the book.

There were Oreos (a huge part of the story), Doritos, coconut bars referencing the coconut pillows, candy that looked like painkillers, and gummy teeth to nod to some of the book’s funniest moments involving food and teeth. It was clever, nostalgic, and laugh-out-loud funny, and it instantly became a focal point of the decor.

The Gifts & Details

We added a few small themed gifts to round out the night, including beautiful floral bookmarks to match the aesthetic and satin hair accessories that felt perfectly bridal without being over the top. These little details tied everything together and made the night feel thoughtful and intentional.

The Outfits

The only dress code was simple: dress for a wedding.

Guests could arrive as a bride, bridesmaid, groom, wedding guest, or anything in between. No one coordinated ahead of time, which made the reveals even better.

A few lucky members still fit into their wedding dresses and got to re-wear them, which felt iconic. Others went thrift shopping and showed up in incredible 80s wedding dresses that absolutely stole the show. We had a bridesmaid, a full “getting ready” bride complete with a satin robe and slippers, and I came as what I imagined the main character would wear to her bachelorette party.

The outfits added another layer of fun and turned the evening into something that felt half Book Club, half performance art.

Final Thoughts

This was one of those nights where everything just worked. The book, the people, the food, the laughter, and the creativity all came together effortlessly.

It’s easily one of the Book Clubs we’ve become most famous for among friends and family, and the kind of evening that reminds us why these gatherings matter so much. Equal parts reading, celebration, and creativity, this one will be hard to top.
